Girls Guide is a program to educate and empower young Somali and other East African (S/EA) girls by providing weekly workshops and trainings focused on the intersectional experience of being Black, Muslim, and a girl in America. The goal is to educate and empower ten (10) S/EA girls on topics ranging from intergenerational/intercultural conflict resolution to racial disparities in Seattle Public Schools. Other topics include: Islamophobia and harassment, gender roles and discrimination, school-to- prison-to- deportation pipeline, African/black identity, individual and communal responses to individual and institutional racism, feminism/womanism, and generational trauma. Long term goals are to build a sustainable program-model for Muslim girls of color in South Seattle and to develop girl leaders and encourage peer-to- peer mentorship.
